Galleries > Interior Portrait of Sonya Rosario

In this interior portrait of Sonya Rosario, I am approaching portrait as a metonymy, by treating one part as the whole. I am approaching this portrait as an internal or interior portrait, utilizing the stories of Sonya, different gestures and evident actions in her life to convey a sense of who she is. I am using large loose canvases to bring importance and emphasis to different parts of her body and her own stories or expressions. At the same time I am inviting the viewer to become closer and more intimate with very small collages with images of her real features from the film. Sonya is the creator of WOCA (Women of Color Alliance), an activist and a filmmaker. Among her documents is “Idaho’s Forgotten War” and currently working in her new document “Sofa Diaries”. Most of all, Sonya is a devoted friend, an activist, a seer, a listener a storyteller and a passionate leader that has been one of our most important and inspirational Latino influences in Idaho.
